Enough is known to make almost all densely populated areas active travel friendly. It is simply a matter of political will.

2,400 miles or 60% of Seattle's streets were changed to 20 mph in 11/7/2016. 20% reduction in total number of collisions two years before (2014, 2015) compared with two years after (2017, 2018) data. 4,907 vs 3,912. https://twitter.com/dongho_chang/status/795637008190144513 …

In Seattle a reduction of max speed to 20mph/30km on 2400mi/4000km reduced deaths, all collisions by 1,000! When gov increases speed limits and deaths increase, are elected officials responsible? Murder? (as Ontario, Mexico City, others are doing).

So heartening to see young people demanding action on climate change. Scotland is and must continue to be a world leader. #ClimateStrike #ClimateEmergency https://twitter.com/digitalkatie/status/1131879505851748352 …

Young people say. "Fix your climate Bill". While you're at it you could take on board some of the #Greens @scotgp good ideas. @markruskell's 20mph bill would be a huge gain for #ClimateEmergency also air quality & road safety - saving young people's lives. Stop blocking it.

Good to see this response to @AlisonJohnstone by @NicolaSturgeon at @ScotParl . You can also see our video on 10 reasons why @scotgov should support the 20mph Safety Streets Bill at https://vimeo.com/337590864

Excellent research from @SustransScot pulling strong evidence together that people living in deprived communities need #saferstreets and 20mph limits. If you live in Wales you are going to get 20 limits on streets where you live, not so in Scotland.

#BackOnTheBike today! I love cycling to work but sometimes it is hard to head into this traffic, esp after terrible news. I just want to save money, get fit, enjoy the sunshine, & make it to work safely. I've got as much right to the road as anyone else. I'm not going to stop ✌️

Walking and cycling have been designed out of #Scotland's towns and cities as an every day transport choice! It has now become a social justice issue we need @ScotGovFM @MathesonMichael @HumzaYousaf to support the 20mph #saferstreets bill to make Scotland safer and more pleasant!

.@scotgov to spend £883m on motorways and trunk roads in 1919/20 yet won't spend £20m on the Safer Streets Bill to help protect vulnerable road users in Scotland's towns and villages. See our video on why they should support

It could be like walk to school week every week. If an enforced 20mph limit was set to protect children walking and cycling. Their independent mobility depends on how selfishly we exercise our independent motorised mobility. A 30 national limit is no longer fit for purpose.

Does your police force protect vulnerable road users by enforcing 20mph limits? Well done @ASPolice for routinely enforcing #20splenty.

Good to see Wales moving towards a national default 20mph limit for urban and village roads. Will @theSNP maintain the 30mph limit set by Westminster in 1934 or will it use @markruskell 's 20mph bill to reduce the 60% of road casualties happening on its built-up roads?

In Scotland "The majority of pedestrian casualties of all severities occurred on roads with a 30mph limit in 2017". Yet @MathesonMichael says setting 20mph limits should be done in the English, street by street manner. Hmmmm

Clearly Scotland's Transport Minster didn't get the memo about the "Climate Emergency" and is more interested in the 57% of the transport budget spent on unsustainable transport than facing up to the realities of taking action on global warming...

Green MSP @markruskell has told parliament his party won't commit to negotiations over the Scottish Government's next budget unless climate change and a green new deal are at its heart. As a minority gov, the SNP relies on greens to get the budget through.

Scot Government's Climate Emergency Declaration is a sham when @MathesonMichael bows to motoring lobby rather than public health professionals and academics by failing to support @markruskell 's Safer Streets Bill. What hope greening of Scotland when falling at first hurdle.

"with the transport secretary claiming drivers may not pay attention to such a law if it was passed." Some don't pay attention to drink drive laws, to using your mobile law, seatbelts! It's not a reason. -Self-centred drivers, who is going to stop me?- £ money for enforcement £

We struggle to understand what @MathesonMichael's objections are - nationwide 20mph limits in built up areas will save lives and save money. Public health experts want it, communities want it, parents want it.

@NicolaSturgeon @ShonaRobison @JoeFitzSNP there is no good reason not to support the 20mph Bill and make #Dundee and #Scotland more attractive place to walk, cycle and live! @dundeecycling @LynnesnpR
