A quick note to you all. Let us never, ever, ever give up.
Coming to a committee hearing near you soon:
Can’t wait to do a Twitch 101 class with House Dems so we can finally get the Super Smash Bros Town Halls we’ve all been waiting for 😂
Me: “I don’t think billionaires should concentrate wealth while employing people who are sleeping in cars working a zillion hours to survive.” Next day: “That will be TEN PINOCCHIOS to Ocasio, ‘zillion’ is not a number and I found someone who sleeps in a tent, not a car.”
(Also, for what it’s worth - I meant to say hookworm*)
Just saw a Fox News segment in which they referenced @AOC saying it's immoral that billionaires coexist in a country with "people [who] are still getting ringworm bc they don’t have access to public health" & @marcthiessen's literal response was "1st of all, ringworm isn't fatal"
If we didn’t laugh, we’d cry
Confirmed: @AOC wins a spot on the high-profile House Oversight committee, giving her a potentially huge platform to interrogate Trump administration officials in next two years.
@AOC Doesn't literally mean that the world will end in 12 years. She's saying we have a very limited carbon budget and are walking into a mine field @MichaelEMann analogy the more we burn CO2 the worse drought, wildfire, coral bleaching, record temps, rising sea level etc. become
Agreed--that's the right framing, and the @AOC statement is defensible in that context. Some seem anxious to throw her under the bus...
“Until America tells the truth about itself, we’re not going to heal” @AOC at MLK Now 2019.
algorithmic bias is completely real and excellent reporters like @davegershgorn have been covering it for years. It’s cool to see a politician like @AOC talking about it https://twitter.com/realsaavedra/status/1087627739861897216 …
If you’re misinformed enough to think @aoc is wrong, join me in remembering this story about an automatic soap dispenser. https://www.iflscience.com/technology/this-racist-soap-dispenser-reveals-why-diversity-in-tech-is-muchneeded/ … https://twitter.com/realsaavedra/status/1087627739861897216 …
Taking this @AOC quote into my week: "My choice isn't what I breathe in, it's what I exhale... And right now, in this moment, I feel a need for all of us to breathe fire." Breathe fire, friends.
.@AOC highlights recent research finding hookworm in Lowndes County, Alabama where residents lack basic sewage systems and are regularly exposed to "raw sewage." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/05/hookworm-lowndes-county-alabama-water-waste-treatment-poverty … https://twitter.com/_waleedshahid/status/1087744533591482369 …
If we truly love this country, we will choose to see and address all of it. Including Lowndes County, Alabama. ⬇️
26 Billionaires in the world have more money than 3.8 billion people combined. yeah so I am standing with @AOC when she correctly said that it is immoral that less than 30 people have more wealth than half the world’s population.
It really is frustrating that so many feel the need to craft you into a character rather than simply listen to what you have to say.
Bingo. That’s one aspect of histrionic coverage: the notion that discrediting the messenger can discredit the message. I spoke about this just yesterday in a public conversation w/ Ta-Nehisi Coates. You can watch the whole exchange here: https://www.trcnyc.org/mlknow2019/
This reinforces lazy tropes about women leaders in media: - Older + seasoned, but unlikeable - Passionate, but angry - Smart, but crazy - Well-intentioned, but naive - Attractive, but uninformed or gaffe-prone It’s unoriginal, lazy, and men don’t get the same either/or coverage.
Ocasio-Cortez gives 'zero' f–ks about what other Democrats think https://nyp.st/2FRaBKk
And here’s the @nypost not only running with the false quote, but adding an angry photo to boot: This is how news hysteria develops out of nothing at all.
In a shock to no one, @politico is also running with the misattribution as well. Here’s what actually happened: I was asked a question on a late night show and answered with the word “zero.”
Ocasio-Cortez: I give "zero" f-cks about pushback from other Democrats http://hill.cm/CWzTZEz
I actually didn’t say this, so while I know “brown women cursing” drives clicks, maybe you accurately quote the whole exchange instead of manipulating people into thinking I said this sentence instead of just the word “zero.”
It’s wild that some people are more scared of a marginal tax rate than the fact that 40% of Americans struggle to pay for at least one basic need, like food or rent. Imagine if we focused positively, away from fear of the former toward solving the latter.
After Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez highlights extreme inequality, Jason Chaffetz complains: "Look, that is class warfare, it's taking a stereotype and exploiting people" http://mm4a.org/4Pt
As a reminder, Jason Chaffetz is the guy who thought your healthcare costs the same as a T Mobile bill, so I wouldn’t exactly call him the foremost expert on the financial stressors of everyday Americans.
