Avengers films ranked: 1. Avengers (Still the best, works as a standalone film) 2. Endgame (Satisfying conclusion to 22 films, but doesn't work as a standalone film) 3. Age of Ultron (Messy, but has a unique directorial take.) 4. Infinity War (An overstuffed, under-baked mess.)

It mostly has to do with AoU having a directorial stamp to it. The film FEELS like a Whedon film, and I find the story threads come together in the end. IW, to me, has some of my favorite moments in the MCU, but I found the narrative messy, hollow, and the ending disappointing.

It is though. Look at The Force Awakens, the 7th film in a series that continues a 40 year old narrative but still manages to sand on its own. You can watch it and have no knowledge of the previous films and appreciate it. Endgame only works if you watch 22 other films.

I have a weird love/hate thing for AOU. I liked seeing the Avengers interact with each other outside of a battle and I liked most of the banter. I didn't even mind Hawkeye's secret family. I really hated the way Ultron was done. He was a wasted villain in that movie.
