2018 is ending, but it brought a fair share of great news. I am excited to announce a number of opportunities for jobs and studentships within projects starting in 2019. No order of preference but check for specific opportunities and timeline.
“Women starting their first research labs tend to be paid lower salaries, have fewer staff and have access to less laboratory space than their male peers” #womeninSTEM https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00933-0?utm_source=twt_nnc&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=naturenews&sf209655694=1 …
We spent a year in the courts to secure the ability to revoke Article 50. Let’s use that power. 200,000 signatories & rising. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584 …
I'm one of the 1.5million to have already signed the petition to #RevokeArticle50 We have the law to do it, the European Parliament has said we can right up to the day we leave. Our Government is in disarray and have no way forward. This is the only sensible option now #Remain
🇪🇺 Hundreds of EU students and staff contribute to our thriving international community here at Swansea. We value each and every one of them. We will continue to do so, whatever happens. That’s why we’re proud to fly the EU flag 💙 #SwanseaUni #WeAreInternational
Am proud of my University for flying the EU flag today!
I propose that from now we use "Theresa May" to refer to the act of repeatedly resubmitting a rejected paper without doing any revisions.....
A call to stop tolerating pseudo-human science in media, where real experts in Humanities (sociologists, anthropologists) are even more rarely intervening than other scientists. This leads to feeding hatred, preconceptions and other harmful interpretations. Use #NoFakeSHS

It's heartwarming to see so many students strike for climate in dozens of countries across the world. What was the total? A hundred thousand? A million? How many are needed until governments stop to pay lip service and truly start to act on climate? #FridaysForFuture
Time for another #Fermanagh #PineMarten The natural recovery of Pine Martens in this county has been accompanied by a complete collapse in Grey Squirrel numbers, with Red Squirrels returning to local forests/ gardens. #conservationoptimism
Our new paper is out! 😃 https://doi.org/10.1111/bjet.12752 … Lecturers - if you upload feedback for your students to your course websites (e.g., track changes in Word, scanned PDFs) please make sure students CANNOT see their marks in the system without accessing the feedback file first! 1/3
Very nice piece of pedagogical research combined with smooth R mastery. What's not to like? Great job mate!
Finally something positive #Conservationoptimism https://twitter.com/CITES/status/1105266369644425216 …

Question for anyone but especially for grad students: If you could wave a magic wand to give yourself really good mental health and well being, what is the first small sign that would tell you your magic worked? #MentalHealth
Breeding season is just around the corner, & I need your help to find #kestrels - if you spot one please report your sighting at http://bit.ly/KestrelsNI & help us understand what may be contributing to their decline! @IrishRaptorSG @nirsg #raptors @NaturalistDara @PaulCaplat

The Egyptian Vulture was once so famous it was used as an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. But now it's Endangered. Now, this #MagnificentVulture is setting off on migration. Will it survive the journey? #FlightForSurvival
How big is a cell? It's a question I ask my 1st-year university students. As a class we work out an answer by discussing various cell types and comparing length scales. This video is great - nicely shows the sizes of different cells and viruses. https://imgur.com/r/educationalgifs/KzG92ec …
This week is, somehow, largely dedicated to reading & commenting on PhD plans (half-term, initial, just past-initial) and I realise I LOVE seeing the cool and interesting projects my students work on. So much I have to learn! @Daf_Ram @alethionaut @CostagliolaRay
This guide (http://www.nature.com/nature/authors/gta …) is one of my favorite explanation of how to write an abstract -- once students see this, there is usually much less editing work to do.
