Whatever Brendan Howlin may say, the wonderful news is that Green Parties have done well all over Europe, especially in Ireland; and the far right have had no success whatsoever.

Taking the piss – and doing something useful with it (via @IrishTimes) http://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/letters/taking-the-piss-and-doing-something-useful-with-it-1.3049071 … Good idea to #upcycle our own body #waste

Throwing human urine down the drain, to pollute our rivers and lakes, is crazy. 70% of the phosphorus and soluble nitrogen we excrete is via our urine; it can easily be separated (as in some Swedish toilets), and will substitute for imported fertiliser, which is becoming costly.

Brilliant interview with Lelia Doolan on Sunday with @MiriamOCal - discussing her creativity and #Bealtaine2019. Talking about the importance of not pulling each other down but supporting each other. #artsinireland #rtesupportingthearts

Definitely a brilliant interview with @LeliaDoolan on @MiriamOCal with a great woman; makes us want to ‘get out & do something wild’. Lelia was an inspiration to all of us when campaigning to protect Mullaghmore from inappropriate development.

Oh dear ! If that is the Government's "scientific adviser", his principal objective appears to be the development of "business opportunities" based on a view that is too close to climate denial for comfort. Natural gas as a transitional fuel should be discussed with caution.

Ronan Berry on 103FM gave me nearly 20 minutes of airtime today to discuss a Midlander's response to the Dáil declaration of a climate emergency and, let's not forget, also a biodiversity emergency. Thank you FM103. - http://www.midlands103.com/news-centre/declaration-climate-emergency-important-turning-point/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=socialnetwork … via @Midlands103

Election time soon -- your vote matters in both our local government and European Parliament @Europarl_GA elections. Ask every candidate to push the Irish Government and the @EU_Commission to fight #climatechange. #IvoteNature #EUElections2019 #ThisTimeImVoting #FridaysforFuture

Ireland becomes the second country in the world to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency https://www.rte.ie/news/enviroment/2019/0509/1048525-climate-emergency/ …

Being a small country enables Ireland to act quickly, to make the leap from laggard to leader. Which country will be the third in the EU to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency? It might be @LithuaniaME @LithuaniaInEU @LithuaniaMFA giving a lead to the Baltic States !

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” ~ Alexander Graham Bell. Now Dáil Éireann has opened a door to a less damaging future -- but we must go through, and act !

Now we've declared a climate and biodiversity emergency it's time to act. We must stop issuing oil & gas exploration licenses and the extraction of peat. We need new transport and land use plans. We build a circular economy which avoids single use plastics. #ClimateEmergency

Now we've declared a climate and biodiversity emergency it's time to act.
We must stop issuing oil & gas exploration licenses and the extraction of peat.
We need new transport and land use plans.
We build a circular economy which avoids single use plastics.
#ClimateEmergency

And we need to do more of what the @greenparty_ie has advocated: insulation of 1000s of homes; rapid & electric rural public transport network, free for most users; re-wetting of worked-out and damaged bogs; a wetland nature park in the midlands; etc. #ClimateEmergency

In response to the climate emergency declared by the Dáil yesterday, social scientists can identify and reveal alternatives to the present unequal power structures that shape our communities, harm and constrain our lives, and damage ecosystems …

Definitely the next question for the @CitizAssembly to address: the mass extinction of species, and how we can stop it, or at least halt the destruction. No more importation of farm livestock feeds from countries where forests have been destroyed to make way for soya monoculture.

dail has passed a motion declaring a climate Emergency? Great, should mean govt will support bill to ban oil and gas exploration, next up ban LNGs and invest in off shore wind, then free public transport :if its an emergency, lets act like it @NHNAireland @SCC_Ireland @trocaire

Definitely agree -- now that a climate emergency is declared, let's act like we should in an emergency: no time to waste, everyone to take active steps to become aware & informed, challenge existing climate-damaging systems & activities; join with neighbours, listen @Midlands103

The Irish parliament has declared a #ClimateEmergency. The Government's first response must be the immediate implementation of the Dáil's #JOCCA blueprint for #ClimateActionNow, in full and on time, as part of Minister @RichardbrutonTD's new action plan. https://www.stopclimatechaos.ie/news/2019/05/10/dail-declares-climate-emergency-and-endorses-bluep/ …

Not only must the Dáil act quickly to implement recommendations of the @CitizAssembly and Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action, and follow the leadership shown by the Climate Generation @gold_lgold, but also local radio should raise awareness, as @Midlands103 has done.

Also of interest -- Dublin Waste to Energy, which operates the incinerator on behalf of Covanta, will pay no tax in Ireland, having borrowed the capital cost at 13.5% interest from another Covanta-owned company in Luxembourg … #incineration #circulareconomy #climatechange https://twitter.com/NoonanJoe/status/1125305959616741377 …

And the Covanta-owned company in Luxembourg, Dublin WTE, has probably borrowed the €400 or €500 million at ECB rates of near zero %, will make a huge profit on the loan, and will pay almost no tax in Luxembourg. The victims: the Irish Revenue and the Irish taxpayer !

This (alongside the tweet its replying to) gets to the heart of the nuclear energy debate. https://twitter.com/nuclearkatie/status/1115019835262558208 …

We need a detailed, thorough and evidence-based debate on nuclear energy; the pros and cons, safety and waste disposal, and all other issues. Problem is: nuclear energy generates fear and emotion, neither being good neighbours with a science-based debate.

Who will pick up the levy costs? Costs will be put back to consumers in extra levies on waste streams. https://twitter.com/NoonanJoe/status/1125305959616741377 …

And Ireland will be denied the taxes which should be paid by "Dublin Waste to Energy", as the incinerator operator has apparently borrowed at high interest rate from another Covanta-owned company Dublin WTE, based in Luxembourg.

Fracking is bad for the environment - perilous to groundwater whatever the procedures taken!

PJ is correct, but to add to his point, fracking is unnecessary and contrary to a policy and climate imperative which states that fossil fuels have to be phased out, and left in the ground.

Irish farmers take note: worldwide meat and dairy production uses 83% of farmland and accounts for 58% of agricultural GHG emissions but only 18% of food calories. Grazing for cattle accounts for about 25% of the world’s land.
