These are not new stories -- only the international interest in these cases is new. Call it what it is: die-hard patriarchy determined to control women at whatever abusive cost. #SaudiWomen #StopEnslavingSaudiWomen

Congratulations to my colleague @bentaub91 for this well-deserved recognition! (and if you haven't read the award-winning piece, do so immediately.)

hi, this is a continuation of the trump administration's long-running attempt to pick off the most vulnerable part of lgbtq community (trans folks) + appease the rest (cis gay folks) so that they stay home + stay quiet. just so we're clear.

Yes, a hundred times yes!

my piece at @thelilynews: Saudi Arabia’s brutality was apparent long before Khashoggi’s murder. Just look at women activists.

Yet Saudi reformers like @LoujainHathloul and @essamz are languishing in jail. What Saudi “justice system”? https://twitter.com/ajenglish/status/1097462660369666048 …

a wave of a dictator's hand can determine the fate of thousands, or millions; there is no centralized, codified justice system (or constitution!) in Saudi Arabia -- & those familiar with the courts know how arbitrary, piecemeal, and unpredictable the 'enforcement' can be.

When Saudi Arabia officially lifted a ban on women driving last June, it made for a great photo-op. But was it followed by real reforms? Journalist @SarahAziza1 sets the record straight https://buff.ly/2GSooRt .

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 an important step. Make no mistake, the Saudi regime is paying very, very close attention; this is about so much more than arms. & may this bring the Yemeni people closer to peace. House Votes to Halt Aid for Saudi Arabia’s War in Yemen

it was such a pleasure & honor to spend time speaking to this classroom of intelligent, thoughtful, and ambitious young people. we had a great discussion about the necessity -- and danger -- of investigative journalism, & the unique challenges facing women and refugees worldwide.

Human Rights Defenders ask Apple and Google to remove Saudi app that tracks women. Question: did they really need to be asked? Are there no limits to their greed? https://cnn.it/2SKYVjc  @emranski @sarahleah1 @KarenAttiah @SarahAziza1 @tamaraqiblawi @bencnn

great point-this app has been around for yrs (i address Absher in stories for @NewYorker & others in tandem w @pulitzercenter) frustrating that it's just now being addressed by major co.s, but shows that coverage of these issues is making them more skeptical of abusive clientele.

this chilling & enraging story is not new, but getting much warranted renewed coverage; yet another example of the ruthless extremes taken by authoritarian, patriarchal gov’ts to silence and control females. it’s a rule: corrupt power always targets women

The question every democratic government, would-be investor and celebrity guest ought to address to the Saudi regime is this: Why are these women still in prison while their torturer roams the royal court?
