Thanks so much it was a great #GOGAHour!
That's a wrap for #GOGAHour tonight! Key takeaways for falling in love with activity: don't put too much pressure on yourself, set goals, enjoy the social side and go at your own pace. Thanks @Spiritof2012 for hosting!
So what have we learnt on this journey of love and physical activity? Having a helping hand makes such a difference when starting out Making new friends and connecting with others is important It's good to spice things up when you've been doing an activity for a while #GOGAHour
It's about ensuring it stays true to what makes me happy not someone else's expectations. I used to fence & my coach wanted me to be more competitive. I'm naturally not competitive so I resisted & he let me be. A good coach works to the individuals needs #GOGAHour
A3 - also add in something to help improve your sport e.g. strength training, yoga, pilates. It'll help the first sport but also break up the monotony which might start to lower your enthusiasm (got to be careful with the analogies here!!) #GOGAHour
Linking the activity to wellbeing, and providing it in a safe, familiar environment can be a big factor in helping to firstly engage people but also keep them coming back. @GOGANotts yoga activities is a good example of this. http://www.getoutgetactive.co.uk/news/258-stress-awareness-month-get-out-get-active-nottingham … #GOGAHour
For @shonalouiseblog, who blogged for us last year about taking up swimming, it was about setting monthly goals but also not putting too much pressure on yourself. http://www.activityalliance.org.uk/news/4632-becoming-more-active-shonas-2018-recap … #GOGAHour
Kept on pushing myself new goals and new challenges #gogahour 💪
Not sure if it was people in the team, the sport, feeling afterwards ...maybe a mixture ....no easy answer! #GOGAHour
That's a good point - what we have found is that usually it's a mixture of a a few values that help our participants fall in love with being active. A social setting definitely helps! #GOGAHour
A2: Speaking personally, I took up running in 2018 and I became smitten once I saw myself improving - which from a standing start was really soon! Then using it as another way to socialise became another reason and ultimately the endorphins remind you each time #GOGAHOUR
For Shay, who appears in our Ten Principles in action film, it was all about how climbing started to make her feel brave. #GOGAHour http://www.activityalliance.org.uk/news/4074-activity-alliance-releases-ten-principles-film …
