This much is 100% clear: Carrie Lam is unable to say the word “retract.” Whether by choice or by Beijing directive. If she did retract all #extraditionbill proposals she might regain some of society’s trust - but would lose Beijing’s and her job. Rock and a hard place. @CBSNews
To say that she's stuck between a rock and a hard place is to suggest that this is a difficult decision. But it's not. We should not accept the establishment framing that the authoritarian demands of Beijing are somehow equally valid with the rights, lives, and will of HK people.
畜生的世界银行给中国贷款，然后这笔钱用到了建造新疆集中营！ 大家赶快点击链接下载这个PDF文件！！ https://twitter.com/Erkin_Azat/status/1140814927311097857 …
If this is true, the World Bank and its members need to look into it. It’s really not ok for the WB to finance concentration camps
PRC's outrage culture sees insult in a UBS economist's comments on sick pigs & impact on pork industry. "Much of this quickness to anger is a product of modern mainland culture...education, propaganda, and an endless parade of dreary TV dramas"
Giant, the world’s biggest bicycle maker, is emerging relatively unscathed after it showed remarkable alacrity in responding to the trade war. The chairwoman also told @hwang61 the era of making products in China for global markets is over. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-17/world-s-top-bicycle-maker-says-era-of-made-in-china-is-over … via @business
BBC reporter just asked how she claimed she listening to people while she has neither withdrew the bill nor is she resigning. Carrie Lam said she had suspended it (same old stuff) and she would like a "second chance"
This "second chance" nonsense perpetuates the polite charade that CE represents or serves people of Hong Kong. Let's dispense with it. She didn't earn her first chance from us, and she's not actually asking for a second one.
China's cyber spies have accessed the private emails of “many” top Obama administration officials, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official and a top secret document obtained by NBC News, and have been doing so since at least April 2010.
"Resign" isn't part of the "people's choice" platform. It's a pandem political issue that most people don't care about.
Of course this is bullshit. the only reason that #CarrieLam's resignation has been dropped is that everyone in #HongKong recognises that CCP refuses to appoint someone that might be acceptable to actual HKers and that anyone the CCP would appoint would be just as toxic
Stephen Lo basically just invited two million citizens to file complaints to the "complaints against police" office. I hope they're ready for overtime.
Unfortunately, the complaints office (CAPO) is a part of police force, not independent. There is an independent oversight body (IPCC), but they’re toothless and have no investigatory powers. They submit recommendations to the CE and Commissioner, who are the source of the rot.
“According to data collected by the Pew Research Center, Italians have the least favorable view of China of the four countries (DE, FR, IT, UK) by 10 points and the least amount of confidence in China’s president, Xi Jinping, by 12 points.” https://www.china-briefing.com/news/italy-government-china-belt-and-road/ …
We see this widely across the EU -- although citizens have a less favorable view of the PRC, nevertheless their leaders opt for deals w/ Beijing. Most pronounced under UK's Cameron administration during so-called "Golden Era" of relations w/ China. Begs question of #elitecapture
