A short video of the late Paweł #Adamowicz put together by the European Solidarity Centre which shows some clips of him as a student activist in Solidarity as well as later opening of the ECS building.

#OnThisDay 1943 Germans sent the first transport of Polish political prisoners to the #Majdanek camp. This group consisted of over 1300 men and women. The main reason of their imprisonment was their involvment in resistance movement.

Treblinka Extermination Camp. The monument is on the site of the large gas chamber. Around 900,000 people were murdered here in just over a year. Unbelievably, all this was done by 20 - 25 German and Austrian SS men, supported by up to 120 guards, many of whom were Ukrainian.

"My life's so little now, such a mere nothing, like a sigh that I send homewards on a sleepless night [...] Who knows when the fate that has dragged me into the 5th calender year of the war will take me home?"- Hungarian soldier's letter home 17.1.1918

#OnThisDay in 1945 the Red Army marched into a huge pile of rubble where an ancient and historic capital had once stood: Warsaw. Prior to the outbreak of war, the city's population had been 1.3 million; by 1945 it numbered just 153,000

Review: "Cold War" is already getting Oscar buzz, because it’s a near-perfect movie

The #Kotwica emblem painted in thousands of places in #OccupiedPoland gave hope to millions of Poles, and was a signal to the Germans that the #PolishUndergroundState did not lay down arms in the struggle against the invader.

Have you ever seen this sign? This is a sign of Poland fighting. It was painted for the first time on the streets of Warsaw which was occupied by the Germans 76 years ago!
Today, it is a symbol of devotion to our homeland, and our fight for it. It is also a symbol of memory!

OTD in 1945, Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved 15,000 Jews in WW2, was kidnapped by the Soviet NKVD who took him to Moscow & later killed him.

The "Kotwica (Anchor) - Fighting Poland" sign was designed by a Polish art history student Anna Smoleńska who perished at the German Nazi Auschwitz concentration camp on March 19, 1942 - at the age of twenty three. (https://twitter.com/AuschwitzMuseum/status/975633909240291329 …)

#Maps Now this is something to behold. The partitions of #Poland (1772, 1793, 1795) being used to sell chocolate, by French company Chocolate Pupier (founded in 1860s, still around today). Made sometime in early 1920s. Compare it with the original "allegory" by Le Mire in 1772.

Poland has been asking - begging - for more US forces (of any type) on their soil since 2004. Every time I went there they had another “new” idea to sweeten the request. But this...well, it’s a clever approach given their target audience of one. And it’s a bad idea. https://twitter.com/julianborger/status/1042123602483703808 …

I refer to the following. You end with “it’s a bad idea” but don’t say why. A symbolic permanent US presence in Poland would be a great deterrent against Russian aggression.

Mr. @TuckerCarlson, during your @FoxNews late night show you said that „Poland is not a core Western European country,” and not threatened by Russian aggression. I don’t know where you took your geography & contemporary politics classes, but I see a lot of room for improvement.

Attributing any fascist connotations to its [Polish Kotwica] use is manipulative, disingenuous and seems to serve as an underhanded effort to discredit this beautiful symbol that continues to retain important contemporary significance to millions of Poles

❗@ipngovpl strongly protests against the use of the emblem of ‘Fighting Poland’ in connection with any fascist symbols. The ‘Kotwica’ sign stood for Poland’s resistance against the German occupier during #WW2 and is particularly meaningful for Poles🇵🇱 #IPN @Greenpointers
