Seventy-five years ago, F.D.R. proposed an international park along the Rio Grande that would protect lands on both sides of the border. The idea was to bring the United States and Mexico together. It still sounds like a good idea, says @dan_reicher.
Replying to @nytopinion
FDR was an epic President. RIP.
So we as American tourist can go to the park with our families and watch our country get invaded everyday by illegals.....we will really be talking about the good ole.days when America was ruled by a govt for the American citizen and not the world power
Mail used to take 6 months to reach Europe. Now it takes 1 second. We have to adapt. Making the rest of the world illegal doesn't work. Trashing their countries and economies doesn't either. Obama started treating Mexico fairly and the net flow was south.
Really last time I looked I wad an American citizen therefore our govt should first and foremost care about the American citizen. Second the money in my pocket is printed and backed by the American govt and taxpayer.
None of that prevents us from allowing some legal visitation. Cheaper and more effective than chasing them as illegal for 20 years to life. Just not working. Trump won't even mention legal visitation. World is leaving your isolation culture in the dust. Border & worldwide.
Legal visitations are a thing ya' know? It's called a Visa... No, not the credit card. But seriously, look it up.
I could have said citizenship but that is failure. I have real solutions. He purposely offered up 2 million for daca. He wanted it to fail. A green card works. We know who they are for 1 thing. He won't say it. You watch. More failure. Here they come. Veto override next!
How do you figure he wanted it to fail? He wanted wall $ in trade for DACA kids path to citizenship. Seems like a win win to me. It's called compromise. That way less kids will have to live looking over their shoulders. It IS our law- no illegal immigration.
The standard number for daca was 800k. He came up with 2 million out of nowhere. That way his supporters would be against it. He also twice turned down $27 billion that both houses had agreed to. He did it on TV. He doesn't want a deal. He wants controversy and hate stirred up.
This is great, inclusive idea that should be read and talked about. Retweet.
It sounds good & like the end of a beautiful Disney story BUT in reality that is NOT ideal because the crime/ child trafficking/ drugs trafficking it sounds like up open international park easy access for crime/ gangs / drugs & endangering children/ smugglers & etc
That's a great idea, as long as the Mexicans stay in Mexico and don't break our laws by jumping across to the US without the proper authorization. That's the problem with Mexico now--no respect for the Rule of Law. I live here and experience it everyday.
Excellent ... with a nice wall right down the middle!
God, the dumbasses that come out of the woodwork on these stories... A park suggests that it would have security that is not already in place. It would be more secure than it is at present.
That was then. This is now.
No way. Border wall
The idea of an international park goes back well before 1944. In 1932 or 1933 a Texas chamber of commerce proposed the idea. Then in 35 Sen Sheppard wrote the Prez with the idea. In the same year Sec Hull met with Mexican officials about it.
