A mother, her four children went to Belgian embassy in Beijing for visas to join the father in Brussels. They are Uighur Muslims. Belgians evicted them. Chinese cops drove them 30 hours home for possible detention. Where are they? My story @janeperlez

If you haven't seen it yet, here's the video of #HongKong #DemocraticParty leader Wu Chi-wai walking up to a line of police firing tear gas rounds shouting "I want to see your commander!" #antiELAB

If Lam issues a new apology today, will she use the first person? Will she bow? How many times and for how long? Will she stick with the spoiled child metaphor and say sometimes parents make mistakes? Will it make any difference without withdrawing the bill?

Pro-Beijing newspaper TaKungpao reports that Carrie Lam will make a proper apology + scrap the law "soon" 特區行政會議今日休會,特首林鄭月娥會見傳媒,估計將會就明確撤回修訂移交逃犯條例有所宣布,並將會就事件向市民正式道歉。http://www.takungpao.com.hk/opinion/233114/2019/0618/305243.html …

“What happened in the last week was like magic...I suddenly felt as if Hong Kong’s flower of freedom had opened again, and it was very bright,” said @hu_jia

Parents in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region took to the streets on Sunday to urge US politicians to not interfere with the SAR's extradition amendments and its internal affairs. #HongKong

Many stories coming out from Hong Kong's peaceful demonstration. I'd like to share one. I met a family of nine, spanning three generations. The grandfather marched last Sunday. Today the whole family decided to come out together after witnessing events that unfolded this week

Just drove by Pacific Place, and passing all the flowers left there for the protester who died was quite moving. Hong Kong is a huge bustling place where people often keep their heads down but these past few days the city reminded us again that it has heart.

I’m in Central, Hong Kong, near the site of the recent protests against the China extradition bill. I want to show you a few things that might give us hints about where the protests are coming from. Follow this thread for a quick walking tour!

Organizers say close to 2 million participated in today’s protest. The police estimate will be lower. But little doubt the size of the crowd rivaled last week’s. This isn’t over. Live updates:

Huge cheers from crowds inside a nearby mall, as democrat Roy Kwong passes through. He bows as protesters applaud him.

This is beautiful and magical: within minutes of hearing there are elderlies stuck on the bus, the hundreds of thousands that were occupying the driveway made way for them to pass. Drivers & passengers waved in thanks while protesters clapped&cheered. Some shouted "HKers add oil"

This is incredible, incredibly ordered, with a sea of protesters giving way to buses to leave Harcourt Road in Admiralty. #ExtraditionBill

This is something else

The opposition smells blood in the water and is going for it. Beijing must be nervous. Carrie Lam’s resignation would focus attention again on how Hong Kong’s leader is chosen without free elections. Live video and updates:

The death of a protester who fell from the Pacific Place shopping mall has injected the protests with a sad emotional edge. He had been wearing a yellow raincoat with slogans criticizing Carrie Lam and the police. Live video and updates:

Turnout seems clearly in the hundreds of thousands in Hong Kong. It was a thick slow crawl like this in Wan Chai for more than an hour.

Many are demanding the authorities stop describing Wednesday’s protest as a “riot.” Reminds me of the calls to “reverse the verdict” on the “counterrevolutionary riots” in Tiananmen in 1976 (reversed) and 1989 (not yet). Live video and updates:

This bubble tea stall in Wan Chai is handing out free ice water and face masks. They have also put up a sign that says “Go Hong Kong”. #extraditionbill #hongkong

I had the free water here. My son ordered the “brown sugar boba milk” and said it was delicious.
