What an honor to have @NSMASportsMedia HOF inductee @peter_king in the booth today! As great as his @NFL writing is, he also has some incredibly entertaining baseball stories from his days covering the Reds in the early 80s (hence why I'm in stitches in that first picture).

Thanks for having me in the booth with you, @joe_weil and @CClingen14. Had a great afternoon with the Winston-Salem Dash.

“So much of what he did to help his team didn’t show up in the numbers” is always just code for “I believe he was really good and the evidence doesn’t support so I come up with a way to make myself feel like I wasn’t making a biased decision”

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion. I don’t think votes should be tied to numbers.

Question...Do you vote by the numbers or what your eyes seen on the field?

That is a great question. I am more of “go by what I see” voter, but I do have respect for numbers and longevity. I don’t think Hall of Fame voting in football should be a strict numbers game. Eras are too different.

In the end, we’re all going to have strong opinions on who should be in and who should not be—or who is most deserving in a given class. I say this all the time, and most people think I’m full of it, but I can tell you I approach the job trying to do the right thing every year.

Re Monk: You may remember, and may not, that what swayed me on Monk was coming to the conclusion that Monk was his team’s Harry Carson. So much of what he did to help the team didn’t show up in numbers.

The challenge is to try to make the right decision by considering all factors of a career, and to do that by treating the players/coaches/contributors you know and have great respect for the same as those you don’t know as well. Sometimes that’s hard.

Just curious if acknowledging your biases should allow you to dismiss them and approach voting in an objective way

I did say I have biases “if that’s what you call strong feelings about people being candidates or not." I don’t think that is how most people define biases. When you are voting for the Hall of Fame, the hard thing to do is cut the field. That will never change. (thread)

Maybe one voter can't block somebody but they can sure as hell promote an agenda and get others to follow along. The whole "Signature Play" BS was started by King on Art Monk as a reason to keep him out.

Hello @bobsheets16. None of what you say is true. Unless “promote an agenda” means “give an opinion.” That I do. Unless “signature play” means “body of work.” That I promote. Have a good weekend.

On using more RPOs, regrets, a chat with Doug Marrone, wanting to coach more aggressively, new team leaders, losing Nick Foles and building around Carson Wentz. Doug Pederson unplugged. https://theathletic.com/1017595/2019/06/13/doug-pederson-tries-to-move-the-eagles-forward-while-getting-them-back-to-where-they-used-to-be/ …

So much good stuff in here from @danpompei, honest stuff from Doug Pederson about a coach living with some regrets.

RIP Pat Bowlen, a significant architect of a top franchise and of the NFL ... though he never wanted credit for either.
