Young husbands and fathers: There is nothing worth losing our families over. No temptation, salary, achievement, measure of fame, promotion, opportunity, job title, accolade. Work very hard; build a vocation; leave it all on the field. But don't lose your family.
The single best argument against God, for me, is how bad He is at declaring his glory. It would be trivially easy for God to let us know He exists. Instead, the world chugs along exactly as if He didn’t.
Billions of people do see God's glory in the universe. I became a believer precisely because of my work in astrophysics. As for why God doesn't make His existence impossible to deny, well, that's the subject of my chapter in the book Dr. Carroll just received.
My heart is heavy tonight after a day along the border. There are amazing people doing all they can to respond with Christ-like compassion here in El Paso--the Church at its best. But there's also so much human suffering converging here, exacerbated by US policies in some cases
I agree that we can’t say we know for certain that there’s no God. We can say: -The evidence cited by believers is consistently poor and/or speculative -The God hypothesis has demonstrated no predictive powers -Science is making good progress without that hypothesis
If you think the evidence for God cited by theologians like Augustine and Aquinas all the way up to modern philosophers and apologists like C.S. Lewis, William Lane Craig, and John Lennox is "poor" or "speculative," that means you don't understand it or you don't want to.
Young men: when you're looking for men to train under and denominations/networks to join, choose those grounded in biblical polity and biblical character. Avoid flash, missiological haste, an atheological bent, sloppy exegesis, cultural captivity, and personality-driven schemes.
St. Valentine was imprisoned beheaded & buried on 14 Feb 269 AD for helping persecuted Christians & marrying Christian couples! While in prison he prayed for his jailer’s daughter & her blindness was healed. On the day of his execution he left her a note signed, ‘Your Valentine.’
If reading our Bibles and ‘going deeper’ doesn’t lead to us forgiving others, befriending ‘sinners’, giving money away, loving Jesus, serving when no one’s looking, a heart for the lost...we’re not becoming a disciple. We’re becoming a Pharisee. Further from Jesus, not closer.
If someone tells you stories in the Bible are borrowed mythology, check for yourself to see if it's true. I was told Genesis copied the Babylonian creation story. Comparing them side by side, it's obvious this is bogus - any similarities are far outweighed by differences.
