Extremely obscure/strange Pokemon encounter master thread:

This is to document Pokemon that either have extremely convoluted ways of getting them to appear or other strange nonsensical oddities

    Quoted @TKOWL

You have to wonder who keeps scenario writing Regigigas encounters in the main series because every single one of them besides USUM is fucked up in some ways

In order to get Spiritomb in DPPT, you have to place the Odd Keystone in this hole and then talk with people 32 times in the underground

And to get it in HGSS, you need 100,000 watts in the Pokewalker to unlock the Quiet Cave, and then having to take another 10,000 steps

Manaphy is one of the few non-event locked mythicals, but you have to trade its egg from Pokemon Ranger to DPPT after beating the former game, which wouldn't be so bad if it were limited to ONE per cart, and there's no way to tell your cart is eligible until beating Ranger

Mew is also one of the extremely rare mythicals available outside events but until LGPE, the only way that would happen was if you deposited 999 Pokemon into My Pokemon Ranch (which was only compatible with DP outside of Japan), then trade an egg to Hayley for one

There's an even worse one in Pokemon Box Ruby and Sapphire (a game that's also the rarest Gamecube game currently and goes for $300+ on the market), where you had to put in 1,500 Pokemon into the box just to get a Pichu with Surf

Not quite as egregious as the previous one, but you had to put in 100 Pokemon into the box in order to get an ExtremeSpeed Zigzagoon, which was the only way to get that move onto Linoone until USUM finally added it to its breeding list 14 years later

Sludge Wave, despite being a TM since Gen 5, has not been able to be taught to Gengar in any way besides some events in Gen 6, meaning that Gengar's is and will be locked out of one of its best moves for all generations now and in the future

On Kalos Route 17 you can find Snovers extremely easily that are 1-2 levels from evolving but theres a 1% chance you'll find a level 40 Abomasnow and it's one of the most pointless rare encounters out there

Porygon is way cheaper to buy in the Game Corner in Blue than it is in Red because of the extremely weird scripting of the localization

I can put pretty much every SOS-locked Pokemon species on here but Mareanie is one of the worst because you have to know its lore beforehand and even then you're not guaranteed, I can bet that everyone got one of these from the GTS or Wonder Trade instead of in-game

Every single Pokemon you can obtain from the Curtis or Yancy sidequest in BW2 (and there's a LOT of them) are all being counted on here because initiating the sidequest requires like 15 insano pixel hunts that are impossible to do without a guide

The Lucarionite is the easiest mega stone to obtain in XY because it is forcefully given to you alongside a Lucario in the main story

However, in ORAS, in order to get one, you have to beat the master ranks for all the contests and then beat Lisia, which is insanely difficult

Garchompite was also a relatively easy mega stone to get in XY, just requiring you to get it near a healer in Victory Road during the hour in which you can get them

In ORAS, you have to reach Platinum rank for secret bases, which requires you to amass a fucking absurd 1000 flags

Not a Pokemon obtaining fact, but one I felt like should be brought up:

In ORAS, in order to get the Substitute TM, you have to hope you get the right randomized Mirage Cave and then have both bikes, which you get by advertising the bikes to random people in Hoenn

In vanilla SM, after completing the UB sidequest, Necrozma will be found randomly in grass in the center field of Ten Carat Hill, which is not hinted to properly at all, just looking vaguely saying he saw something flying over Alola

One of the most talked about ones and the big grandaddies of "fuck you" rare Pokemon is DPPT Munchlax, so instead I'm just going to show an image that would probably give someone from Sinnoh a heart attack

One that leans onto the funnier sides but also kinda super obscure is that the only way to get the Sudowoodo line in XY is by having it spawn into a Trevenant horde

With the way hidden abilities work in obtaining in Gen 7 (by having to keep an SOS chain going), and all the Alolan Geodudes having Selfdestruct in their wild moveset, getting one with Galvinize is near impossible unless you have a Pokemon with Damp on your team

By seeing every Pokemon in the new Unova Pokedex in BW2 you can access the Nature Preserve and catch this shiny Haxorus, which is something that doesn't sound too obscure but I've seen so few people talk about it

Also in BW2 is an extremely obscure area called the Castelia Park only accessible from the sewers during spring/summer, and its the only spawning place in the game for Skitty, Eevee, and Buneary

In Sea Mauville in ORAS, once meeting certain conditions you can enter a room where it's stated some eerie sight is happening, and if you interact with the books in the corner, and then check some menu option that obscures the gameplay screen (party or items), Spiritomb appears

Getting the Eevium Z in SM/USUM requires you to go through an extremely long sidequest finding seven NPCs that will not appear until the quest is activated, located in extremely scattered areas around the world

Rotoms can only be found in XY by digging in trash cans on a Tuesday, and it's the only time they can be found naturally in one of their random appliance formes

The only way to get Weavile's evolution item (the Razor Claw) in SM is to find it on a 5% chance on the Jangmo-o line, which is already a rare encounter, meaning you'll have to be double lucky

Continuing on this post since it got way more attention than I thought:

The Bagon on Route 3 of SM/USUM have a 1% chance of SOS calling a wild Level 12 Salamence, which is already ludicrous since the Bagon are already a 1% encounter anyways

Obtaining Headbutt-exclusive Pokemon in Gen 2 is a complex algorithm that I'll just link to here: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Headbutt_tree …

tl;dr: it's kinda like trying to get Feebas where you have no idea which trees will even have a chance of having the spawn tables for Aipom or Heracross

If you don't want to have to grind to evolve Wailmer at level 40 in order to activate the Regis, the only other way of getting one in RSE was a 1% surfing encounter on this small stretch of ocean of Route 129

ORAS completely removed this encounter

As part of the story in BW2, you can get a HA Minccino in the grotto tutorial

However, if you want a second one, it suddenly spikes to an absurd 1% change to reappear, and Pokémon spawning in a grotto is already a 20% chance

If you want an Amnesia Psyduck (the best boosting move in the game) in the Gen 1 games, you have to register every single Pokemon into the Hall of Fame, meaning you have to do it 26 times with a full party of new monsters each attempt, at minimum.
