Vine St. Expressway, Philly. THEY ARE LITERALLY TRAPPED.

Imagine if this were China or Cuba how we’d be covering it.

I’m at a house in DC after being pepper sprayed and knocked down by the police. There are about 100 of us in a house surrounded by cops. All the neighbors on this street opened their doors and are tending to protesters. The cops corralled us on this street and sprayed us down.

Funny how one bad protester labels the whole movement, but a few bad cops are never supposed to represent all cops. 🤔

The President threatened to take over cities and towns with military force. Peaceful protesters were tear-gassed so he could get a photo-op. We will fight for justice for Black lives in America, even if our racist Commander in Chief tries to stand in the way.

The Episcopal bishop of DC – who oversees the DC church Trump just stopped at – tells the @washingtonpost she is "outraged" and that neither she nor the rector was asked or told… “that they would be clearing with tear gas so they could use one of our churches as a prop.." 1/3

"I could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose any votes" IS NOW "I could tear gas peaceful protesters right near the White House and the GOP wouldn't say shit"

LBJ on the riots of 68: “What did you expect? I don’t know why we’re surprised. When you put your foot on a man’s neck and hold him down for 300 years, and then you let him up, what’s he going to do? He’s going to knock your block off.”

In one of saddest days in American history the country just witnessed the President of the United States starting a riot for the purpose of having a split-screen backdrop to his law and order speech basically calling for martial law.

Donald Trump and a host of all-white aides stage a photo op that requires the tear-gasing of peaceful protesters. The President wields a Bible, a book he is clearly not familiar with.

If Democrats remain silent in this moment they are 100% co-conspirators with Donald Trump.

As Trump prepares to leave the White House for St. John's Church, a reminder: he appears to have just ordered the gasing of peaceful American protesters in order to stage a photo op.

In the Rose Garden, Trump calls himself "an ally of all peaceful protesters." At the very same moment outside the White House, police and troops have moved against peaceful protesters with tear gas and flash bangs.

What they are doing to these protestors outside of the White House is so self-defeating and brutal and evil. These were entirely peaceful protests and they just teargassed these kids.

And, if necessary, the 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cav, 3rd Infantry—whatever it takes to restore order. No quarter for insurrectionists, anarchists, rioters, and looters.

Make no mistake about this. Arkansas’s junior senator is calling for mass killings of US citizens without trial.

I, a historian of racial capitalism, explained redlining to my white neighbor today, who responded "but how was that legal?" in literal disbelief. Always amazed at how little white ppl know of the system designed to benefit them at the expense of everyone else.

Any other president would be speaking to the American people who are hurting, trying to heal a divided nation in a time of crisis. Not Trump. He & his aides are still debating what will best help his re-election chances That’s why he is a FAKE PRESIDENT

As others have noted, this past week has felt like a replay of Chicago 1968 all across the nation.

But it goes much deeper than that.

There's a lot of historical inaccuracy being spread here on Twitter. Historians, we've got our work cut out for us.

I truly believe historians have a crucial role to play in this moment.
